Eurythmics | Artist
The Eurythmics was a British synth-pop duo formed 1980 in London, UK, by Annie Lennox (vocals, keyboard, flute) and Dave Stewart (guitar, keyboards). Stewart and Lennox were both previously in the band the Tourists, which broke up in 1980 whilst on tour in Wagga Wagga, Australia. The duo released their first studio album, In The Garden, in 1981 to little success, but went on to achieve global success when their second album Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), was released in 1983. The title track became a worldwide hit which topped the charts in various countries including the US. They went on to release a string of hit singles and albums before splitting up in 1990. The duo developed a characteristic sound which was a synthesis of post-punk, synth-pop and dance music styles, featuring Lennox's strong vocals. In the early stages of crafting their sound, the duo recorded their first album in Cologne with Conny Plank (who had produced the later Tourists sessions) and featured contributions from Can members Holger Cukay and Jaki Liebezeit. These German krautrock and electropop influences can be heard throughout their work. Standout albums include In the Garden (1981), Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) (1983), Touch (1983) and Be Yourself Tonight (1985). In 1984 Eurythmics released the soundtrack album 1984 (For the Love of Big Brother), which was a more experimental work, employing the use of sampling, and contained the hit single "Sexcrime". Stewart described the sound as "Kraftwerk meets African tribal meets Booker T and the MG's." Unknown to the group, Michael Radford, the film's director, had commissioned his own orchestral score and was not fond of Eurythmics' work. Two versions of the film were released, one featuring Eurythmics' music, and the "director's cut", which replaced most of Eurythmics' music by the orchestral score. After the Eurythmics split in 1990, both Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart carried on successful solo careers. Stewart is also a renowned music producer.
