Joshua Tillman aka Father John Misty is an American singer-songwriter, musician, and record producer born 1981 in Rockville, Maryland. Between 2008-2012 Tillman was the drummer and vocalist for Chamber Folk band Fleet Foxes, before focusing on his solo career under the names J. Tillman and Father John Misty. Tillman was brought in a strict Evangelical Christian household. His mother was was raised in Ethiopia, a daughter missionaries, and son Joshua was raised in a Baptist church, attending an Episcopal elementary school, then a Pentecostal Messianic day school. Upon moving to Seattle when he was 21, Tillman began composing and recording songs which he self released on CD-R. His first properly released solo album was the excellent Minor Works from 2006. He went on to release five more albums under the name J. Tillman, including a soundtrack for a short film called The History of Caves, directed by his wife, filmmaker Emma Elizabeth Tillman. Tillman joined Fleet Foxes in 2008 and played on their second album Helplessness Blues. The 2012 release Fear Fun was the first album under the name Father John Misty, which received rave reviews. To-date Tillman has released six Father John Misty albums, standouts include Fear Fun (), I Love You Honeybear (), Pure Comedy (), God's Favourite Customer (), and the latest Mahashmashana (2024). Despite his Evangelical Christian upbringing, Tillman now has more atheist and agnostic leanings, openly criticizing religion in many of his songs.
