Helplessness Blues is the 2011 follow up to the critical breakthrough, self-titled 2008 album from new folk heroes, Fleet Foxes. Released through Sub Pop, the album again saw the band reinforce their status as bastions for reconciling old folk sounds (eg. Neil Young) with a tasteful blend of influences displayed by Robin Pecknold. The album is notably the last to feature drummer Josh Tillman who would leave after it’s recording to pursue his project, Father John Misty. The music expands on the simpler structures and sounds of its predecessor, opting for longer, expansive ballads that display them as more than Neo-Folk cowboys. The band would continue this integration of grander sounds on their 2017 epic Crack-Up, completing the band's perfect trilogy of albums, for the time being. "Montezuma" and the title track are stand-out highlights, but the album is instantly likeable in all facets, and we highly recommend this for all music fans.
