Goldfrapp is a British electronic music duo formed 1999 in London by Alison Goldfrapp (vocals, keyboards) and Will Gregory (keyboards). Alison Goldfrapp began her musical career performing with Dance Company Catherine Massin throughout the Netherlands during her early twenties. In the early 1990s she was a guest vocalist with the electronic band Orbital and trip-hop artist Tricky. She was introduced to composer Will Gregory and they formed a musical duo and began performing under the name Goldfrapp. Signed to Mute Records, the pair began recording their excellent début album Felt Mountain over a six-month period in the Wiltshire countryside. The album was released in September 2000 and produced the singles "Lovely Head", "Utopia", "Pilots (On a Star)" and "Human". Their sound features Alison Goldfrapp's vocals over cinematic soundscapes and is influenced by a variety of styles including cabaret, folk and electronic music. The album was well received by critics, reaching 57 on the UK Albums Chart, and was certified gold in the UK. In 2001 Felt Mountain was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize for the best British or Irish album. The duo have released seven albums to-date, which in musical style have tended more towards electronic dance music over time. The 2013 release Tales of Us, harks back to the sounds of Felt Mountain, and is one of the best of their latter releases. Standout albums include Felt Mountain, Seventh Tree, Tales of Us and Live 2010.
