Gov't Mule is an American southern rock jam band formed 1994 as a side project of The Allman Brothers Band, by guitarist Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody. Both Hayes and Woody were in The Allman Brothers from 1989 until the band ended in 2014. The duo joined with drummer Matt Abts to form 'Mule and they released their self-titled debut album in 1995. Led by Haynes' masterful guitar, their sound is steeped in '70s blues-rock and southern rock, with references to bands such as Free, Cream and Ten Years After. Woody died in 2000 and was replaced by Andy Hess (bass). With the original power-trio no more, they added a fourth member Danny Louis on keyboards. To date, the band has released 12 consistently excellent studio albums and many superb live albums, becoming one of the most well-respected blues-rock bands of their period. Outstanding albums include their first six albums; Gov't Mule, Dose, Life Before Insanity, The Deep End - Vol 1, The Deep End - Vol 2 and Deja Voodoo. The band also has a policy of recording and releasing nearly every one of their live performances, and many of these releases are excellent.
