Ike & Tina Turner were an American husband and wife soul/funk musical duo formed 1960 in St Louis, Missouri. Active during the 1960s and 1970s, Rolling Stone magazine ranked them No. 2 on their list of the 20 Greatest Duos of All Time. Ike Turner was already a successful musician and bandleader from the late '50s with the Kings of Rhythm. In 1956, then schoolgirl Ann Bullock saw the band and convinced Turner to let her join on stage as a backup singer. Turner was so impressed with her strong voice that she was brought on permanently, performing on weekends whilst still at school. Their first recording "A Fool In Love" became an immediate hit on its release in July 1960, reaching #2 on Billboard. Ike then formed the Ike & Tina Turner Revue supported by the Kings of Rhythm with backing vocalists the Ikettes. The Revue soon became one of the most potent live acts on the US R&B circuit, rivalling the spectacle and style of James Brown and the Famous Flames. In 1962, Ike and Tina married in Tijuana Mexica, and moved their entire band to Los Angeles, where they performed on teen rock and roll television shows including Shindig!, Hollywood A Go-Go and American Bandstand. The duo came to the attention of producer wizz Phil Spector who signed them to his Philles Records label and, in March 1966, Tina began recording "River Deep, Mountain High" at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood. The single disappointed in the US, only reaching No. 88 on the Hot 100, however, in Britain, the song became a hit, reaching #3 on the UK charts, and #1 in several other countries. Their UK chart success prompted the Rolling Stones to invite Ike and Tina to be one of their opening acts on their 1966 UK Tour, which was a huge showcase, kicking off with a performance at the Royal Albert Hall. After the tour, the Turners toured Britain's clubs to receptive crowds at Tiles, Ricky-Tick and the Mojo Club. Returning to the US, now with a much enhanced profile, the duo recorded their seminal album River Deep, Mountain High and went on to achieve mainstream success. From their first album in 1961, through to their final split in 1976, the duo released 20 studio albums, plus numerous hit Singles and live albums. Standout albums include River Deep - Mountain High, Come Together, Workin' Together, Nutbush City Limits, and Live in Paris: Olympia 1971. By 1976, the duo's marriage was on the rocks as a result of Ike's cocaine addiction and ongoing physical abuse. Their divorce was finalized on March 29, 1978. Tina carried on with a successful solo career and Ike continued to perform and record blues based albums up until his death in 2007. Ike & Tina Turner were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1991, and the St. Louis Classic Rock Hall of Fame in 2015.
