He started out in music playing guitar in the rock group El Toro et les Cyclones and he wrote successful songs for Françoise Hardy in the 1960s, before moving on to pursue a successful solo career. His music incorporated traditional French Pop and Rock as well as psychedelic and garage rock styles. Some of Dutronc's best-known hits include "Il est cinq heures, Paris s'éveille", "Le Responsable", and "Les Cactus". He epitomises the style and adventure of the French mod-pop scene of the '60s. In 1991 his song "Il est cinq heures, Paris s'éveille" was voted the best French-language single of all time in a poll of music critics. As a recording artist Dutronc has released dozens of Singles, but only 12 studio albums. Standouts include the first four albums: Jacques Dutronc (Et moi, et Moi, et Moi) (1966), Jacques Dutronc (1968), L'opportuniste (1968) and L'aventurier (1969). Dutronc later branched out into film acting, starting in 1973 and earning a Cesar award for Best Actor for the leading role in Van Gogh, directed by Maurice Pialat. He and fellow record label-mate Françoise Hardy started a relationship in 1967, and were married in 1981 for "tax reasons" according to Hardy. The couple have a son Thomas Dutronc born 1973, who is a jazz guitarist and member of A.J.T. Guitar Trio. Dutronc is one of the most popular performers in the French-speaking world although he remains little known in English speaking territories aside from a cult following in the UK.
