Joe Ely | Artist
Joe Ely is an American singer, songwriter and guitarist born 1947 in Amarillo, Texas. Ely's music blends honky-tonk, Texas country, Tex-Mex and rock and roll. In 1970 Ely formed The Flatlanders with fellow Texans Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock, and that band was active up until 2009. As a soloist, Ely has released many fine albums which have transitioned from his early rock and roll sound to a more laid back Country Tex-Mex style. His debut self-titled solo album was released in 1977. The following year, his band played London, where he met punk rock group the Clash and they were so impressed with each other's performances, the two bands later toured together. In a genre-crossing career, Ely has also performed with Bruce Springsteen, Uncle Tupelo, The Chieftains and The Clash, and more recent acoustic tours with Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt and Guy Clark. Outstanding albums include Joe Ely, Honky Tonk Masquerade, Letter to Laredo, Live Shots and the 2018 archival release The Lubbock Tapes: Full Circle. Ely's most recent 2020 album Love in the Midst of Mayhem is also highly recommended.
