Martyn Bates, is an English singer, musician and songwriter born 1960 in Nuneaton, UK. Bates was a founding member of the duo Eyeless in Gaza, and has a successful solo career. He grew up listening to English folk music as a teenager before embracing punk and the more diverse and experimental post-punk and industrial music scenes. Bates formed Eyeless in Gaza with Peter Becker in 1980, and the duo is still active, with their most recent recording released in 2018. Among Bates' solo works are his contemporary classical releases Chamber Works I & II, released in 1994-95. Chamber Music, Vol. 1 is music set to James Joyce's book of poems "Chamber Music", written in 1902. Bates also collaborated with M.J. "Mick" Harris on a three-volume project entitled Murder Ballads which was released in 1998 as a single compilation Murder Ballads (The Complete Collection). Other collaborations include Anne Clark and the band Hungry I, and Martin Tench and the band Twelve Thousand Days. Bates also contributed to Derek Jarman's soundtracks The Garden and The Last of England. Standout albums include Letters Written, Chamber Music I, Chamber Music II, Mystery Seas, Imagination Feels Like Poison and Murder Ballads (The Complete Collection).
