Richard Melville Hall aka Moby is an American musician, DJ, and producer born 1965 in New York City. He is renowned for his innovative and influential work in electronic dance and ambient music. Born in Manhattan but growing up in Darien, Connecticut, Moby started playing the guitar and drums in his teenage years and later delved into electronic music production. His early exposure to punk rock and new wave music influenced his eclectic and experimental style. Moby's first big hit was the song "Move (You Make Me Feel So Good)" off the 1993 EP Move. His breakthrough came in 1999 with the release of his fifth studio album Play which was a critical and commercial success. Blending elements of electronic, dance, and gospel music, tracks like "Porcelain," "Natural Blues," and "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?" became instant classics and propelled Moby to international stardom. Moby's music often combines elements of techno, house, ambient, and rock, creating a unique and distinctive sound that sets him apart from his peers. His use of sampling and skillful production techniques have been widely praised and have influenced other artists in the electronic music world. Moby is also known for his collaborations across a wide range of genres including hip-hop, pop, and rock, with artists such as Gwen Stefani, Public Enemy, and Coldplay. On January 1, 2023, he released the two-and-a-half hour ambient album Ambient 23. Made almost exclusively with dated drum machines and synthesizers, it was inspired by his early ambient heroes including Brian Eno and Jean-Michel Jarre. Melville's father, who died when Richard was only two, gave him the nickname "Moby" three days after his birth as he considered the name Richard too large for a newborn baby.
