Nightingales | Artist
Nightingales are a UK post-punk/alternative rock band formed 1979 in Birmingham, England, by Robert Lloyd (vocals), Joe Crow (guitar), Eamonn Duffy (bass) and Paul Apperley (drums). All four were members of Birmingham's original punk group The Prefects who had been part of The Clash's 'White Riot Tour'. The Nightingales enjoyed cult status in the early '80s and were championed by John Peel, who said of them "Their performances will serve to confirm their excellence when we are far enough distanced from the 1980s to look at the period rationally and other, infinitely better known, bands stand revealed as charlatans". The band stopped working in the late '80s and re-grouped in 2004 with new lineup Robert Lloyd, James Smith (guitar), Andreas Schmid (bass) and Fliss Kitson (drums). The band's music is an amalgam of punk, post-punk and art-rock styles, underpinned by Lloyd's superb songwriting. They have released nine studio albums including the superb Out of True from 2006 and No Love Lost from 2012. Other standouts include Pigs on Purpose, In the Good Old Country Way, Insult to Injury and Mind Over Matter. Robert Lloyd has also released a solo album, and various ex-member spin-off bands include Pigbros and Rumblefish.
