Omega was a Hungarian progressive rock band formed 1962 in Budapest by Laszlo Benko (keyboards, flute, trumpet, vocals), Péter Láng (saxophone), Győző Bánkúti (trumpet), Ferenc Tornóczky (guitar), Zoltán Kiss (drums), Tamás Künsztler (drums, percussion), Janos Kobor (vocals, rhythm guitar), István Varsányi (bass guitar) and András Kovacsics (guitar). Omega has been described as the most successful Hungarian rock band in history, having released more than 20 albums both in Hungarian and English. After several early personnel changes, their classic lineup came together in 1971 and was intact for more than forty years. Singer János Kóbor was with the band continuously from 1962 to his death in 2021; keyboardist/singer László Benkő was present from 1962 until his death in 2020; while guitarist György Molnár and drummer Ferenc Debreczeni joined in 1967 and 1971 respectively. Bassist Tamás Mihály was a member of the band from 1967 to 2017. They have won several prestigious awards for their contributions to Hungarian culture. Transitioning from their early covers of English rock, Omega developed their own style of symphonic prog and space rock which many critics regard in the same rank as contemporary efforts by Pink Floyd, Genesis, or Yes. Of their 30 studio albums, some standouts include 200 Years After the Last War (1974), Omega 6: Nem tudom a neved (1975), Time Robber (1976), and Omega 8: Csillagok útján (1978). Omega achieved great international success through releases in multiple languages, and tours in England and Germany in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s.
