Patricio Rey y sus Redonditos de Ricota aka Los Redonditos de Ricota, was an Argentinian rock band formed 1976 in La Plata, Argentina by founders vocalist Carlos Solari and guitarist Skay Beilinson. The group was active from the mid 70s up to the early 2000s and are known for shaping Argentinian rock and still command an enormous fan base in South America. Patricio Rey is the name of a fictional character and not a real person or member of the group, Los redonditos de ricota (lit. "the small ricotta rounds") is the colloquial name of a variety of home-made bu帽uelos (donut) filled with ricotta cheese. The band was formed to play at various bars and clubs in La Plata, Solari and Beilinson鈥檚 hometown. Skay had played for other bands, such as La Cofrad铆a de la Flor Solar, where he met with the artist and illustrator Ricardo "Rocambole" Cohen, who became the band鈥檚 graphic designer. By the late 1970s, the band did their first tour through Argentina, mainly in the country's northwest. They soon became recognised for their unique post punk sound with blues rock influences, and for their interesting stage performances, including acting and dancing. In 1982, they recorded a demo for RCA, which included the song "Super L贸gico," later played by Buenos Aires' radio stations, getting a positive response. On the strength of that song they clinched a record deal, and released their debut album Gulp! in 1984. Two years later, the critically acclaimed Oktubre was recorded with singer Claudio Puvo. They then had a second hit with the song "Semen-Up." They went on to release a total of eight consistently strong studio albums before breaking up in 2001. Standout albums include Oktubre (1986), Un bai贸n para el ojo idiota (1988), 隆Bang! 隆Bang!!... Est谩s liquidado (1989), and La mosca y la sopa (1991). All their work is characterised by Solari's song lyrics, which touch on subject such as politics, drugs and women, with a philosophical and existentialist approach. Redonditos de Ricota became one of the world's most successful performing acts in terms of the huge audiences they drew to stadium concerts. One of their largest concerts drew more than 140,000 fans at the River Plate Stadium, Buenos Aires, in April 2000. At that show, which was heavily guarded by the police and stadium authorities, Jorge R铆os a thief who was in the crowd, began to attack several people with a knife, and was apprehended and lynched by members of the audience. After the band's break-up the various members continued with solo work and other band projects. In 2005, the band received the Konex Award as best Rock Group of the 1995-2005 decade, a distinction shared with compatriots Divididos.
