Queens of the Stone Age | Artist
Queens of the Stone Age is an American rock band formed 1996 in Palm Desert, California, by vocalist and guitarist Josh Homme, together with Matt Cameron (drums), Van Conner (bass) and John McBain (guitar). Homme has been the only constant member throughout multiple line-up changes. Formed after the dissolution of Homme's previous band Kyuss, QOTSA developed a style of riff-driven heavy rock music. Their sound has evolved to incorporate a variety of different styles and influences, most notably including collaborations with Screaming Trees frontman Lanegan and Foo Fighters and Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl. The bands excellent first three albums: Queens of the Stone Age, Rated R and Songs For the Deaf, sold extremely well, straight away establishing the band as one of the US's premier rock acts. After a pair of relatively lacklustre albums, they sprang back in 2013 with the excellent Like Clockwork. The band has also issued a slew of top-rate Singles which are nicely represented in the 2002 compilation Songs From Amsterdam: A Collection of Live and Studio Recordings, as well as the live album Over the Years and Through the Woods. Homme has on numerous occasions described their music as "rock versions of electronic music," stating that he takes inspiration from the repetitive nature of electronic trance music along with various forms of dance music and krautrock. This heavy rock style mixed with the structure of electronic music has been dubbed by Homme as "robot rock". However there remains a 'stoner' edge to their sound, harking back to the earlier Kyuss days.
