Resistor is an American prgressive rock band founded 2005 in Providence, Rhode Island, by Steve Unruh (vocals, guitar, flute, violin), Fran Turner (guitar), Barry Farrands (drums, vocals), and Rob Winslow (bass). The band's sound is characterized by merging modern progressive and rock song structures with an organic classic rock sound. Steve Unruh is a prog-folk multi-instrumentalist with several solo albums, and is also a member of the Finnish prog trio The Samurai of Prog. Fran Turner has also released solo recordings. Resistor began life when Steve decided to play more electric guitar, and started jamming with fellow electronic engineer and friend, Rob Winslow, who, like Unruh, worked at Hasbro Inc. After several months of lunchtime jams, Steve and Rob hooked up with Hasbro maintenance electrician and drummer, Barry. They spent lunchtimes jamming for the next year, and Steve began composing original music for the trio. Wanting to add another layer to their sound they added guitarist Fran Turner. In 2008, Steve and Fran pooled their recording equipment and recorded the debut self-titled album in 2008. The album got rave reviews, most notably a 10/10 at dprp.net, stating, "the Resistor album is by far one of my favourite albums of the year so far and, depending on how one views these things, is up there in the list of outstanding debut albums." To-date the band has released 8 studio albums, the latest being 2023's Illuminator, plus they've released two excellent live albums. Standout studio albums include Resistor (2008), Rise (2010), The Fifth Season (2021), and Illuminator (2023). The band's guitar-driven sound, with occasional flute and violin interludes, mixes heavy Prog with folkier elements, redolent of bands such as Rush, Jethro Tull and Porcupine Tree. Steve Unruh says they named themselves Resistor because, "We're a band of 3 electronic engineers and an electrician, so we picked one of the cooler sounding electrical components, and because the word 'Resistor' has overtones of staying true to your roots."
