Sex Pistols were an English punk rock band formed 1975 in London by John Lydon/Rotten (vocals), Steve Jones (guitar), Paul Cook (drums) and Glen Matlock (bass). In February '77 Matlock was replaced by Sid Vicious aka John Simon Ritchie aka John Beverley. The band was the brainchild of manager and impresario Malcolm McLaren, who had recently observed New York "punk" scene bands such as New York Dolls and Richard Hell and the Voidoids. The Pistols' first ever gig was on 6th Nov '75 at St Martin's College where Matlock was a student. The band played covers of The Who, Small Faces and Monkees songs. By the following year '76 the band had gigs at The Marquee and 100 Club, and the legendary Manchester gig at the Lesser Free Trade Hall on the 4th of June, arranged by Howard Devoto and Pete Shelley of the newly formed Buzzcocks. Their first single "Anarchy in the UK" was released 26th Nov '76 on EMI Records but the label tore up their contract within months due to negative publicity, and the band then signed to A&M Records. The next single "God Save the Queen" was released on the 10th March '77 on A&M but the label recalled the single, destroying all but a few of the 25,000 copies pressed. The band then signed to Virgin records who re-released "God Save the Queen" and released the band's classic album Never Mind the Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols on the 28th October '77. Other than "Bollocks" and the excellent singles, outstanding releases include the compilations Kiss This (1992), Sex Pistols (2002) and Anarchy in the UK: The UK and US Singles (2017).
