Shellac is an American post-hardcore band formed 1992 in Chicago, Illinois, by Steve Albini (guitar, vocals), Bob Weston (bass, vocals) and Todd Trainer (drums, vocals). Albini was previously in bands Big Black and Rapeman, and Bob Weston also works with Mission of Burma. Shellac's music genre has been classified as post-hardcore and noise rock but they describe themselves as a "minimalist rock trio." Both Weston and Albini are recording engineers. They prefer a sparse, analog recording sound with little or no overdubbing, and are meticulous about microphone placement and choice of equipment. Their '94 debut album At Action Park received some rave reviews from critics, but polarised listeners due to its sparse sound. Other outstanding albums include Terraform, 1000 Hurts, Dude Incredible and the archival release The End of Radio: 14 July 1994 Peel Session.
