David Sinclair aka Tapper "Tappa" Zukie is a Jamaican reggae deejay and producer born 1955 in Kingston, Jamaica. In 1973 Sinclair's mother, concerned with his tendency to get into trouble, sent him to England to stay with relatives. Producer Bunny Lee arranged for him to undertake some recording sessions and shows opening for U-Roy. Zukie's first release was the single "Jump & Twist", he also recorded material for Clement Bushay which formed part of the Man Ah Warrior album, issued in 1973, and giving Zukie a cult following in the UK. Zukie returned to Jamaica, cutting a few singles for Bunny Lee and recording some vocal dubs at King Tubby's studio, which were released in 1976 as the album MPLA. A politically-charged album, MPLA was picked up as a cause célèbre by many punk musicians, including Patti Smith. After 1976, Zukie concentrated on producing music in Jamaica, working with such reggae musicians as The Mighty Diamonds, Max Romeo, Ken Boothe, Sugar Minott and U-Roy. Standout Tappa Zukie albums include the superb Man Ah Warrior and MPLA, plus Tapper Zukie in Dub and Black Man. The compilation Musical Intimidator is also recommended.
