The Cannanes are an Australian indie pop band formed 1984 in Sydney by founding members Stephen O'Neil (vocals, guitar), Annabel Bleach (vocals), Michelle Cannane (guitar, percussion), Frances Gibson (bass), and David Nichols (drums). Over the band's history the lineup has regularly changed, with Stephen O'Neil and Frances Gibson the only constant members. The band emerged from Sydney's fertile Newtown music scene playing a style of existential twee pop, akin in sound to bands like Belle & Sebastian with hangovers. After two self-released albums and several EPs which attracted rave reviews from NME, the band released Caveat Emptor on Chicago label Feel Good All Over, then embarked on a tour of the USA. Thereafter followed a string of consistently excellent albums which fuelled the band's cult following in the USA and their homeland. On their most recent albums the band collaborated with US artists Steward and Explosion Robinson. To-date they have released 10 studio albums, standouts include A Love Affair With Nature, The Cannanes, Arty Barbecue, Communicating at an Unknown Rate and Trouble Seemed So Far Away. Also noteworthy is the band's very first self-released album The African Man's Tomato, which has not been re-pressed since it was first issued in 1987.
