The Flaming Lips is an American rock band formed 1983 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, by original members Wayne Coyne (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Michael Ivins (bass, keyboards, vocals), Mark Coyne (vocals) and Dave Kostka (drums). In the present day lineup Wayne Coyne and Michael Ivins remain, with the addition of Steven Drozd (drums, guitar, bass, keyboards, vocals), Derek Brown (guitar, keyboards, percussion, vocals), Jake Ingalls (keyboards, guitar), Matt Duckworth (drums, percussion, keyboards, vocals) and Nicholas Ley (percussion, drums, samples). After recording their debut self-titled EP, Mark Coyne left the band, handing vocal duties to brother Wayne. The band's sound is an amalgam of science fiction-infused psychedelic pop-rock laden with melodic hooks and electronic soundscapes. After two early low key albums, 1989 saw the release of their third album, In a Priest Driven Ambulance, their first with producer Dave Fridman. Recorded at the State University of New York in Fredonia on a $10,000 budget, the album signalled an expansion in the band's sound and their experiments in tape loops and effects were given a more prominent role. 1993 marked the beginning of a run of seven superb albums back-to-back over fifteen years, starting with Transmissions From The Satellite Heart, followed by Clouds Taste Metallic, Zaireeka, The Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, At War With the Mystics and Embryonic. The 2019 live album The Soft Bulletin: Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, which was performed with The Colorado Symphony Orchestra, is also highly recommended. The band has won a swag of awards including NME magazine's Album of the Year in 1999 for The Soft Bulletin, and again in 2002 for Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. In 2007, they were nominated for a BRIT Award for "Best International Act". They have also won three Grammy Awards and in 2002 Q Magazine included the band on its list of the "50 Bands to See Before You Die". Coyne and Drozd also play in a side project called Electric Würms.
