The Killjoys | Artist

The Killjoys are an Australian indie-pop band formed 1987 in Melbourne by mainstay members Anna Burley (lead vocals, guitar) and Craig Pilkington (lead guitar, vocals). The present day lineup also includes David Folley (drums, percussion) and David Nelson (bass, vocals). The band attracted a wide following in the vibrant Australian pub scene with their appealing pop melodies and bittersweet folk harmonies with a jazzy edge. With their sound very much centred on lead vocalist Anna Burley, one reviewer writing on their live performance described how "standing barefoot in the centre of the Killjoys spotlight is Anna Burley, the embodiment of the Killjoys music, eyes closed, arms outstretched and emphasising the emotion in the music as she sings songs about relationships and human frailty in the purest of voices". Their debut album Ruby won the ARIA Award for Best Independent Release of 1991. This was followed over a period of Eleven years with four more equally strong albums: A Million Suns (1994), Sun Bright Deep (1998), Stealing Horses (2006) and Pearl (2011). Their first four albums are highly recommended.
