An introspective epic from a creative master.
Denzel Curry continues to deft all artistic expectations placed on him as he moves into his 10th year of releasing music. ‘Melt My Eyez See Your Future’ is leagues away from the hard-hitting trap of ‘Imperial’ or the experimental collaborative effort with Kenny Beats, ‘UNLOCKED’.
This is more in tune conceptually to his previous opus, ‘TA13OO’ which was a triptych exploring darkness by moving across the sonic spectrum. MMESYF can be seen as the emotional aftermath of the incredible success he has achieved since these releases.
The acclaim has not come without loss, grief, addiction and strife as Curry explores over these buttery, immaculate instrumentals channelling the sounds of Robert Glasper to be at one point smooth and the next soaring. ‘Walkin’ shows Curry at his creative best with this multi-phased odyssey of Roots-esque rap to the trap hi-hats of a triumphant chorus. This is in contrast to the quieter moments like ‘Mental’ which brings things to a slower pace more suited to the intimate mental state of the album.
Besides that, there’s the optimistic ‘X-Wing’ which embraces a proactive mindset reminiscent of the hardcore PMA that Curry has channelled with his pure energy in live performance. And of course, there’s ‘Aint No Way’ which is one of 2022’s best posse cuts with features from Rico Nasty, 6LACK, J.I.D and Kitty Cash.
This is a thoughtful and transcendent release from one of the best minds in rap.
One of the year’s best, and a landmark for Curry’s discography.
