Johnny the Fox is the Seventh studio album from Irish hard rockers Thin Lizzy, released in 1976 on Vertigo Records. Philip Lynott and company deliver the goods on this rock solid follow-up to the raging Jailbreak LP. The album is a loosely based concept recording, which features a number of melodic hard rock tracks. As usual, Lynott is the man in command, as he paces the Lizzy boys through each colourful track. The twin guitar team of Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham are spot-on throughout this recording. The duo hit their stride on the raging "Massacre", as well as "Don't Believe a Word" and album opener "Johnny". Brian Downey's work on the kit deserves special mention, as his tasteful fills and ability to create a comfortable groove, packed with muscle, forms a solid back beat throughout this effort from 1976. Lynott loosely based the colorful "Johnny" character on the life of Irish folk musician Johnny Moynihan who performed with Sweeney's Men. Johnny The Fox seamlessly joins the timelessness of stories from yesteryear - fairy tales... fables... and circus imagery. A true masterpiece from Lizzy, that is criminally overlooked.
