Ghosteen is the Seventeenth album from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. It is the third instalment in the band's most recent stylistic approach. Following the highly successful Push the Sky Away (2013) and Skeleton Tree (2016), the album continues to reconcile with the sudden passing of Nick Cave’s son, Arthur Cave. The themes expressed are continually abstract and fantastical as Nick retreats further into symbolism and mythology than ever before, creating a refuge and audible world that expresses his grief, reconciliation and hope. Warren Ellis continues to provide his incredible atmospheres with sound washes that cut as much as compliment the mood of a song, for example in the track "Galleon Ship". This ambitious double album starts with spoken word pieces which give a sense of introspection to the first disc, which could be seen as an extension of ideas seen on Skeleton Tree. The final three tracks do a great job of consolidating the album’s themes both sonically and lyrically, and act as a sort of catharsis or payoff to the emotional gauntlet that comes before them. The title-track is both mournful and uplifting before a light drone carries the song’s second half into the reflective “Fireflies”, and the 14 minute closer finds Cave doing his best to capture back his old persona to virtually no avail, offering a possible glimpse to the ultimate impact of the last few years of his life. This album is another puts another star in Cave's discography firmament.
