Andrew Hill was an American jazz pianist and composer born 1931 in Chicago, Illinois. Jazz critic John Fordham described Hill as a "uniquely gifted composer, pianist and educator" although "his status remained largely inside knowledge in the jazz world for most of his career". Hill studied piano from the age of thirteen, and was encouraged by Earl Hines. He attended the University of Chicago Experimental School where he studied under jazz composer Bill Russo and modern classical composer Paul Hindemith. While still a teenager, he performed in rhythm and blues bands and with touring jazz musicians, including Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. Hill's main influences were pianists Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell and Art Tatum. In his lifetime he released 30 studio albums, mostly on Blue Note Records. Standouts include Black Fire, Judgment!, Point of Departure and Compulsion.
