Clark Hutchinson | Artist
Clark Hutchinson was an English psychedelic blues-rock band founded 1968 in London by Andy Clark (vocals, keyboards) and Mick Hutchinson (guitar). Also in the initial lineup were Pete Seers (bass) and Franco Franco (drums). Clark, Hutchinson and Seers were previously together in psych bands Sam Gopal and Vamp. Vamp was a short-lived UK-based quartet founded by ex-Pretty Things drummer Viv Prince in the late 60s. Pete Seers soon left the and would eventually join Hot Tuna and Jefferson Starship, and his replacement Walt Monahagn left to join the Mick Abrahams Band. Steven Amazing (bass) and Del Coverely (drums) would eventually come on as replacements. Clark Hutchinson played a progressive style of psych infused blues rock, and recorded three excellent studio albums before disbanding in 1971. Their debut album A=MH2, an improvisatory set featuring Hutchinson's impressive guitar work, proved immensely popular. A former member of Sam Gopal’s Dream, Hutchinson brought that group’s neo-Eastern influence to his new venture, highlighted superbly by the 13-minute track, ‘Improvisation On An Indian Scale’. Subsequent releases lacked the innovation of the group’s debut release and Clark-Hutchinson split up following a third set, Gestalt. Andy Clark and Stephen Amazing went on to form the prog jazz outfit Upp. Outstanding Clark Hutchinson releases include their three studio albums: A=MH2 (1970), Retribution (1970) and Gestalt (1971), plus the excellent 1994 archival compilation Blues (1994). After the band split in 1971, guitarist and co-founder Mick Hutchinson played on one or two recording sessions with Pete Brown and Graham Bond, then dropped out of the music industry forever. After having spent much of the previous two decades stoned, Hutchinson "walked out on two major label record deals because I do not like all the excess. I didn’t want to play in tobacco smoke and get drunk all the time and the whole thing that happened with heroin and cocaine in the music industry puts me off completely." Instead he became a vegetarian, long distance cyclist, and taught lots of people to play guitar and got them through their music exams.
