Fischer-Z is a British rock group formed 1976 in Sandhurst, UK, by singer, guitarist and poet John Watts. The foundation lineup also included David Graham (bass, vocals), Steve Liddle (drums) and Steve Skolnik (keyboards). In 1982 Watts dissolved Fischer-Z and started a solo career and has gone on to release both solo and Fischer-Z projects. The band had an early burst of success, particularly with their excellent third album Red Skies Over Paradise from 1981. With their quirky new-wave sound and lyrics about global political themes, Fischer-Z found success across Europe and sold more than two million albums. There were collaborations with Peter Gabriel, Steve Cropper and Dexys Midnight Runners, and they performed alongside James Brown The Police and Dire Straits. They also toured the US and Canada and were on the bill with Bob Marley on his last festival tour of Europe. The band's popularity tapered off in the late '80s but they retained a cult following and continued to release several excellent albums right up to the present day. Standouts include Red Skies Over Paradise, Destination Paradise, This is my Universe and Swimming in Thunderstorms. John Watts also has some excellent releases under his own name.
