Happy Rhodes | Artist
Happy Rhodes is an American singer, songwriter, instrumentalist and electronic musician born 1965 in Poughkeepsie, New York. Kimberley "Happy" Rhodes started singing and playing guitar from an early age, and soon stood out with her four-octave vocal range. Rhodes has cited Wendy Carlos, Kate Bush, Queen, Yes, David Bowie, Bach and Peter Gabriel as primary influences. Her musical style has been described as Art-pop or Dream-pop, highlighted by her ethereal vocals, not unlike Kate Bush or Tori Amos. Between 1986-2007 she released seven studio albums before semi-retiring to her farm in upstate New York. Standout releases include Ecto, Rearmament, Warpaint, Equipoise, and Many Worlds Are Born Tonight. In 2016, she came out of retirement and started singing with Security Project, a Peter Gabriel appreciation band, singing lead for 11 live shows in 2016, 19 shows in 2017, and 8 more shows in 2018. Rhodes has a large fan base who call themselves "Ectophiles", inspired by Tori Amos' "Toriphiles." Rhodes and the mailing list Ecto were the inspiration for the creation of The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music, a collection of music reviews by Ectophiles created in 1998 by poet and author Neile Graham.
