Pond | Artist
Pond is an Australian neo-psych band formed 2008 in Perth, Western Australia, by Nicholas Allbrook (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass, flute, drums, Jay Watson (guitar, vocals, drums, bass, keyboards, synthesizer), Shiny Joe Ryan (guitar, bass, vocals), Jamie Terry (keyboards, synthesizer, bass), and Cameron Avery (slide guitar, drums). Kevin Parker of Tame Impala played with the band as a side-project between 2009-11, and James Ireland took over on drums in 2016. The band was originally conceived by members of Tame Impala's touring band and Jay Watson continues to play in both bands. Pond's music blends the free-flowing trippy psychedelia of past and present with the clean instrumental lines of indie pop and a dash of prog rock for seasoning. They released their first two albums in 2009 and both went under the radar. Their third, Frond (2010) attracted more interest, and their fourth album Beard, Wives, Denim (2012) which attracted very positive reviews and mainstream recognition. After touring the United States in 2012, appearing at festivals such as South by Southwest, NME magazine named Pond "The Hottest New Band In The World" in their "Hot List" issue. On 28 June 2012, Pond had a one-off performance with Can frontman Damo Suzuki, one of the band's biggest inspirations and musical idols. With their later albums, their production gained a new sturdiness, adding a synth pop influence without betraying the group's vision. A pair of bubbling synth-pop singles "Pink Lunettes" and "America's Cup" showcased the electronic elements of their sound. The band has has released ten consistently srong albums up to the present day, with standout being Frond (2010), Beard Wives Denim (2012), Man it Feels Like Space Again (2015), 9 (2021), and Stung! (2024). In early 2024, Pond toured Australia and New Zealand as the opening act for Queens of the Stone Age, and delivered a new single, "Neon River." The track proved to be a preview of Pond's tenth studio album, Stung! Shiny Joe Ryan, Stephen Summerlin, Richard Ingham, Nicholas Allbrook, and Kevin Parker also work as a side project named Mink Mussel Creek, which has released the album Mink Mussel Manticore in 2011. Jay Watson works under the name GUM and has also released several albums.
