Robert Earl Keen is an American singer-songwriter and musician born 1956 in Houston, Texas. He is known for his distinctive blend of country, folk, and Americana music, and his songs have been covered by names such as George Strait, Joe Ely, Lyle Lovett, The Highwaymen and Nanci Griffith. As a teenager Keen was an avid reader who excelled in writing and literature classes. Musically, he was influenced by country music artists Willie Nelson, Norman Blake, Jesse Winchester, Flatt and Scruggs, Bill Withers, Gary Stewart, and Jimmie Rodgers. Keen's musical career began during his college years at Texas A&M University, where he started writing and performing his own songs. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1978 and began writing songs and playing bluegrass and folk music with friends, including his childhood friend (and future longtime fiddle player in his band) Bryan Duckworth. During his college years Keen lived with future musician Lyle Lovett. Following the release of his self-produced first album No Kinda Dancer in 1985, Keen moved to Nashville with his future wife, Kathleen Gray, where he signed a new independent label deal. Upon returning to Texas in 1987 Keen released two more albums The Live Album and West Textures, both in 1989. The highly acclaimed West Textures featured the first recording of Keen's signature song "The Road Goes on Forever." Fellow Texan Joe Ely also recorded the song on his 1993 album Love and Danger along with another Keen song, "Whenever Kindness Fails." The artist has since gone on to release 12 consistently strong studio albums. Standouts include No Kinda Dancer (1984), West Textures (1989), A Bigger Piece of Sky (1993), Gringo Honeymoon (1994), Gravitational Forces (2001), and What I Really Mean (2005). Also recommended are the two live albums The Live Album (1989) and No.2 Live Dinner (1996). His album Gringo Honeymoon is widely regarded as a classic of the Americana genre, featuring hits like "Merry Christmas from the Family" and "Feelin' Good Again." Keen's music is characterized by his vivid storytelling, witty lyrics, and a deep connection to his Texas roots. His songs often explore themes of love, loss, and the complexities of everyday life. Keen's live performances are legendary for their energy and intimacy, with his charismatic stage presence and storytelling ability captivating audiences wherever he goes. His annual Christmas shows and charity events have become beloved traditions for fans, showcasing his generosity and commitment to giving back to the community. In addition to his solo work, Keen has collaborated with a diverse range of artists, including Lyle Lovett, Joe Ely, and the Dixie Chicks. Keen also partners with fellow Texan Randy Rogers in the The Stryker Brothers duo, who have released one album. Today, Robert Earl Keen continues to tour and record music, staying true to his roots while pushing the boundaries of traditional country music.
