Roky Erickson | Artist
Roger Kynard "Roky" Erickson was an American singer-songwriter, harmonica player, and guitarist born 1947 in Austin, Texas. He was a founding member of The 13th Floor Elevators and a pioneer of psychedelic rock. Erickson co-founded the 13th Floor Elevators in late 1965 along with Tommy Hall and they released their debut album, the garage-psych classic The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators, a year later in '66, when Erickson was still only 19 years old. The following year they released their superb 2nd album Easter Everywhere. Erickson left the 'Elevators in '68 due to mental health problems, he was later diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. After years of rehabilitation Erickson went back to music and formed a succession of bands: The Aliens, The Explosives and The Resurrectionists, all with different line-ups. As well as his band releases, Erickson released many excellent solo albums including Don't Slander Me, Gremlins Have Pictures, Love to See You Bleed and All That May do my Rhyme. From his band releases Roky Erickson and the Aliens (5 Symbols) and The Evil One are superb albums, as are Beauty and the Beast and Casting The Runes.
