The Flying Burrito Brothers are an American country rock band formed 1968 in Los Angeles, California, by Chris Hillman (guitar, vocals, mandolin, bass), Sneaky Pete Kleinow (pedal steel), Gram Parsons (guitar, vocals, keyboards), Chris Etheridge (vocals, bass, piano) and Michael Clarke (drums). The band was a who's-who of west coast rock, with Hillman, Parsons and Clarke previously with The Byrds, and Chris Etheridge previously with Parsons' old band the International Submarine Band. After a few years of stability Parson and others would leave the Burrito's to be replaced at various time by future Eagle Bernie Leadon, Al Perkins, Skip Battin, and Australian Brian Cadd. The Flying Burrito Bros were one of the earliest groups to merge country music with psychedelic rock, a sound which is evident in their classic debut album The Gilded Palace of Sin, released in 1969. This was followed by Burrito Deluxe, after which Gram Parsons left the band to hang out with Keith Richards and the Rolling Stones. Their third album The Flying Burrito Bros, although missing the trademark sound of Gram Parsons, was a strong album but it would mark the end of their peak period. The band went on to release 19 studio albums, under many different lineups. The first three albums are their standout releases, plus the 1974 compilation Close Up the Honky Tonks.
