Underground Lovers | Artist
Underground Lovers are an Australian indie rock and electronic music band formed 1989 in Melbourne by mainstays Glenn Bennie (guitar) and Vincent Giarrusso (vocals, guitar). The duo originally formed as GBVG in 1988 but later renamed the band as Underground Lovers and added new members Richard Andrew (drums), Maurice Argiro (bass) and Philippa Nihill (vocal, keyboards). Bennie and Giarrusso met in a Melbourne suburban high school during the 1970 and were both influenced by Joy Division, New Order, the Cure and the local underground electronic and experimental scene. The band self-funded their eponymous debut album on Shock Records which established their melancholy guitar pop sound, spiked with rhythmic dance elements and some reflective, acoustic folk. The single "Lick the Boot" followed and became their first UK single. When the album appeared in the UK and United States markets it was re-titled, Get to Notice, after its opening track. Their second album Leaves Me Blind was a more layered and experimental work and was released on Polydor in Australia and the short-lived 4AD imprint, Guernica elsewhere. The album provided three singles, "Ladies Choice", "I Was Right" and "Your Eyes". Underground Lovers supported the Cure and My Bloody Valentine on their respective Australian tours in 1992 and then embarked on a tour of the UK and North America in the first half of 1993. For their third album, the excellent Dream it Down, the band enlisted Melburnian electronic producers David Chesworth and Robert Goodge. This became their breakthrough album and they followed it with the also excellent Rushall Station in 1996. To-date the band has released Ten studio albums including the soundtrack to the film Mallboy. Standout releases include Dream it Down, Rushall Station, Cold Feeling and the 2000 live album Evil 94.97. Also highly recommended is the 2011 compilation Wonderful Things: Retrospective. Glenn Bennie has an ongoing solo project named GB3, and Vincent Giarrusso is a member of Mist & Sea.
