Woods is an American folk psychedelic-rock band formed 2005 in Brooklyn, New York, by founders Jeremy Earl (vocals, guitar), Christian DeRoeck (vocals, guitar) and Jarvis Taveniere (multi-instrumentalist). The trio were previously together in the band Meneguar. After several years DeRoeck departed and after various other movements, the current lineup is Earl and Taveniere together with Aaron Neveu (drums), Chuck Van Dyck (bass) and Kyle Forester (keyboards, sax). Pitchfork described the band's sound as "a distinctive blend of spooky campfire folk, lo-fi rock, homemade tape collages, and other noisy interludes, all anchored by deceptively sturdy melodies." To our ears, there are definite similarities to bands like Tunng and Beachwood Sparks. To-date Woods have released 13 studio albums plus several collaborations. Standout albums include Sun and Shade (2011), Bend Beyond (2012), With Light and With Love (2014), City Sun Eater in the River of Light (2016) and Strange to Explain (2020). Pitchfork gave the album Songs of Shame (2009) its "Best New Music" designation. Singer-guitarist and founder Jeremy Earl also runs the Brooklyn label Woodist for whom the band releases their work. Woods also served as David Berman's (Silver Jews, Purple Mountains) backing band on his solo gigs up until the time of Berman's tragic passing.
