Jorge Duilio Lima Menezes aka Jorge Ben is a Brazilian popular musician, born 1942 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His characteristic style fuses samba, funk, rock and bossa nova with lyrics that blend humour and satire. His 1969 album Jorge Ben was released at the height of the cultural and musical Tropicália movement and went on to be a world-wide success. During the 1970's Ben's music became more experimental, most notably A Tábua de Esmeralda ('74) and Solta o pavão ('75). The following year he released one of his most popular albums África Brasil, a fusion of funk and samba which relied more on the electric guitar than previous works. Ben has released 29 studio albums, standouts include Samba esquema novo, Jorge Ben, Fôrça bruta, A Tábua de Esmeralda, Ogum Xangô and África Brasil. In 2005 Ben was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Latin American Recording Academy. A year later, a remake of Ben's "Mas Que Nada" became an international chart hit for Sergio Mendes and The Black Eyed Peas after being used by Nike in a global TV advertisement during the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
