Buffy Sainte-Marie, OC is a Canadian-American singer-songwriter, musician, composer, visual artist, educator, pacifist, and social activist born 1941 on the Piapot Plains Cree First Nation Reserve in the Qu'Appelle Valley. In her teens Sainte-Marie taught herself piano and guitar and by her twenties, she was touring and performing in various concert halls, folk music festivals and Native American reservations across the United States, Canada and abroad. Her 1964 debut album It's My Way! won her the acclaim of Billboard Magazine's Best New Artist. Her contemporary folk style has country and psychedelic touches making her a distinctive voice among 60s-70s mainstream folk artists. Sainte-Marie was married to musician and producer Jack Nitzsche with whom she co-wrote the hit song "Up Where We Belong". Outstanding albums include It's My Way!, Many a Mile, Little Wheel Spin and Spin, Illuminations and Best of the Vanguard Years compilation.
