Bernard Parmegiani | Artist

Bernard Parmegiani was a French electronic music composer born 1927 in Paris, France. He is best known for his electronic "acousmatic" music and has been a huge influence on younger experimentalists such as Aphex Twin, Autechre and Sonic Youth. He composed his first major work, Violostries, for violin and tape in 1964 for a choreography performed for Théâtre Contemporain d'Amiens. He went on to study and compose works which explored the links between music and video and the dynamics of performing electronic music in large auditoriums. Standout works include De natura sonorum, La création du monde, Pop'eclectic and La mémoire des sons. The 2020 reissue of the seminal work Violostries is highly recommended. Along with his serious compositional work Parmegiani also wrote a number of jingles for the French media and the "Indicatif Roissy" that preceded every PA announcement at Terminal 1 of Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris until 2005.
