Embryo | Artist
Embryo is a German musical collective formed 1969 in Munich by multi instrumentalist Christian Burchard (drums, vibraphone, santur, keyboard) and Edgar Hofmann (saxophone, flute). Throughout its time, 400 musicians have played with the Collective. In March 2016 Christian Burchard suffered a stroke whilst travelling in North Africa, since then his daughter Marja Burchard (drums, vibraphone, vocals, trombone, keyboard) is leading Embryo. In it's early days Embryo was one of the leading Krautrock bands playing jazz-rock fusion, with similarities to Can. Over time Burchard extended the band's scope toward "Eastern" music styles. The band travelled extensively in Morocco and India, absorbing the local musical sounds and recruiting local ethnic musicians to play in the Collective. The band has released to-date 28 studio albums plus many fine live albums. Standouts include the early works Embryo's Rache, Steig aus, Rocksession and We Keep On. The 2010 compilation 40 is also highly recommended as a document of the band's later more eclectic work. Chris Karrer, who has been with Embryo since 1995, was a founding member of Amon Düül and Amon Düül II.
