Avishai Cohen is an Israeli jazz double bassist, composer, singer, and arranger born 1970 in Kibbutz Kabri, Israel. He began playing the piano at 9 years old, but changed to the bass guitar at the age of 14, inspired by bassist Jaco Pastorius. Cohen moved to NYC in 1992 to study and by 1997 he was recruited by Chick Corea into his New Trio. From 1998 Cohen began recording solo works and after several years formed the International Vamp Band then the Avishai Cohen Trio with Nitai Hershkovits (piano) and Daniel Dor (drums). To-date Cohen has released 17 studio albums including solo and ensemble works, plus the film soundtrack Le sens de la fête. Standout albums include Devotion, Colors, At Home, Continuo and Gently Disturbed. Also highly recommended is the live album As Is ... Live at the Blue Note. As a point of clarification, there is another Israeli musician named Avishai E. Cohen, who is a jazz trumpeter.
