Shinsei Kamattechan | Artist
Shinsei Kamattechan is a Japanese rock band formed 2007 in Chiba, by Noko (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards, programming, composition), Mono (leader, keyboards, programming, tambourine), Misako (drums) and Yūnosuke (bass, chorus). They describe themselves as an "Internet Pop Rock Band", which reflects the blend of pop melodies and piano with dark lyrics and punk rock sensibilities found within their music, as well as the band's long history of broadcasting live performances and aspects of their daily lives on the Internet. The band's sound is melodic, piano-driven pop with noisy guitars and manic, unhinged vocals. Frontperson Noko's dark, unflinching lyrics address subjects such as self-harm, suicide, mental illness, and gender identity. They initially gained a fan base through their extensive live streaming and homemade videos, and have been a fixture of the Japanese charts since their first release, the 2010 EP Tomodachi wo Koroshite Made, plus their major-label debut, Tsumanne, and contributions to anime series such as Attack on Titan established the band's cult following overseas. While their early efforts are their most jarring and experimental, subsequent releases such as 2012's Tanoshiine and 2014's Hero Syndrome are more polished and accessible. More recent albums like 2020's Child's Medical Record are a mixture of the group's pop and experimental impulses, and 2025's Danchi Thesis incorporates orchestral and acoustic elements. Standout albums include Tsumanne (2010), 8-gatsu 32-nichi e (2011), Tanoshiine (2012), Shinsei Kamattechan (2013), and their first EP Tomodachi wo koroshite made (2010). Band leader Noko and keyboard player Mono have been friends since youth. Noko, who was born in New York but moved to Chiba soon afterward, was subjected to bullying as a student and dropped out of high school. They have been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder. The band has received a lot of media attention in Japan, although Noko rarely does interviews. They particularly drew attention for Noko's erratic behaviour during an August 2011 television appearance on TBS music program ComingSoon!! Noko also gained attention for the live broadcast of an unauthorized band performance in front of Shibuya Station, and the subsequent intervention of local law enforcement, in 2010. The literal translation of the band name Shinsei Kamattechan is "sacred seed of interest".
