Salmonella Dub | Artist
Salmonella Dub is a New Zealand dub-reggae band formed 1992 in Christchurch by original members Andrew Penman (guitar, samples), David Deakins (drums, vocals, acoustic guitar), Mark Tyler (bass, keyboard) and Conan Wicox (saxophone, percussion, vocals, keyboard). MC Tiki Taane (acoustic guitar, vocals) became a full time band member in 1997. Known locally as the "Dubbies", Salmonella Dub has been called the pioneers and originators of a unique Pacific style of drum 'n' bass dub/reggae/hip hop and groove-based rock containing elements of the Polynesian hip hop style known as Urban Pasifika. The band helped foster and tour acts like Fat Freddy's Drop, Shapeshifter, Cornerstone Roots, Kora, and Trinity Roots on the New Zealand music scene. The band's first two albums went under the radar, but their 1998 single "For the Love of It" was a surprise hit, and their third album Killervision became their commercial breakthrough, hitting number seven in the album charts and winning accolades at the New Zealand Music Awards. For the next album they reunited with David Wernham, who engineered their early recordings, in an attempt to get back to their roots. The resulting album, Inside the Dub Plates, was their most successful outing yet, becoming their first number one album and spawning the hit single "Love Your Ways." The album was followed by remix collection Outside the Dubplates, which included reworks by dub heavyweights Adrian Sherwood, Dreadzone and Mad Professor. To-date the band has released 11 studio albums, plus EP's and Singles. Standout albums include Killervision (2000), Inside the Dubplates (2001), Outside the Dubplates (2002), and One Drop East (2003). Also recommended is the excellent compilation Remixes and Radio Cuts (2005). For many years the band has been connected to the small north Canterbury town of Kaikōura, where they have their studio, and where they helped found the Kaikoura Roots festival.
