The Dead C | Artist

The Dead C are a New Zealand based noise rock trio formed 1986 in Dunedin by Bruce Russell (guitar), Michael Morley (guitar, vocals, computer) and Robbie Yeats (drums). the group is known for its improvisational lo-fi guitar soundscapes and experimental take on rock music. They became known internationally through their releases on the Philadelphia record label Slitbreeze, especially the 1992 double LP Harsh 70s Reality. Earlier albums such as Eusa Kills and DR503 found the group still drifting between song-based work and the experimental free rock found in later albums including The White House and Tusk. Recent albums have seen the group add electronics and samples, yet still maintaining their origins in trademark hazy guitar chaos. Outside of The Dead C unit, Bruce Russell and Michael Morley each have prolific solo careers. Russell has to-date 25 solo or collaboration albums releases under his name as well as under the monicker 'Dust'. Morley has 26 album releases under his name and his aka names 'Gate' and 'The Righteous Yeah'. The Dead C band has released 24 albums, standouts include DR503, Runway, Trapdoor Fucking Exit, Harsh 70s Reality, The White House, Future Artists and Secret Earth. Also recommended are the 4 live albums under the series title The Twelfth Spectacle, plus the compilation album Vain, Erudite and Stupid: Selected Works 1987-2005 (2006) on the Ba Da Bing! label. During his time at the University of Otago, Bruce Russell was a member of that university's champion team in the television quiz University Challenge and, later in life he worked as an archivist in Radio New Zealand's Sound Archives. Michael Morley currently teaches at Otago Polytechnic School of Art in Dunedin.
