Pink Moon is the Third and final studio album by British Folk musician Nick Drake, released in 1972. Unlike his previous two albums; Five Leaves Left and Bryter Later, which had lavish production with members of Fairport Convention as a backing band, Pink Moon is purely a solo effort. Aside from a touch of piano on the title track, the album consists only of vocals and acoustic guitar. Nick Drake was strongly considered to be depressed at the time of writing. The album runs at only 28 mins as apparently Drake could not write any more music than this. Some think of this as a very depressing album, and whilst it has sad and haunting overtones, it's also beautiful, uplifting and inspiring. In his lifetime, Drake was virtually unknown outside the UK folk scene, but has since been rightly recognised as one of the greatest Folk musicians of all time. Nick Drake sadly released no more music before his death in 1974. This quote from the booklet of the Fruit Tree box set sums up Pink Moon in essence: "By peeling away everything that isn't absolutely necessary, what is left must be the heart of the thing". An essential album.
