Yeule | Artist
Natasha Yelin Chang aka Nat Ćmiel aka Yeule is a Singaporean musican songwriter and producer born 1997 in Singapore. Yeule, who identifies as non-binary and is now based in London, creates dreamy experimental pop that reflects a lifetime fascination with the online world of fantasy game-play and anime characters. Their songs are often riddled with glitches, static, and bitcrushed effects, along with atmospheric guitars, intimate vocals, and occasional dance beats. Yeule started playing classical piano at the age of six but later took up guitar and drums. As a high school student they played in an indie rock band called Riot Diet and sang in a jazz group. They relocated frequently as a child, and had a hard time fitting in at school, leading to constant feelings of isolation. Video games and online communities provided inspiration and solace, and as Ćmiel began making and performing music on their own. They took the name Yeule, as a reference to a Final Fantasy character as well as their birth middle name. Heavily influenced by indie electronic artists like Grimes, Holy Other and Purity Ring, their self-titled debut EP appeared in 2014, followed by Pathos in 2016 and Coma in 2017. They additionally wrote music for Lost Memories Dot Net, a game inspired by group chats and online culture of the 2000s. In 2019, Yeule signed to Bayonet Records and released the dreamy ambient pop album Serotonin II. In 2021 they released Nuclear War Post X, a digital album containing covers of songs by the Breeders, Frank Ocean, the Velvet Underground, Grouper and others. They also released a nearly five-hour drone piece titled "The Things They Did for Me Out of Love" and the emo-tinged single "Don't Be So Hard on Your Own Beauty." Yeule's third album Glitch Princess was released in 2022, followed by Softscars, released on Ninja Tune in 2023. Softscars, which contains some of the artist's strongest songwriting and most daring sound design, dives into shoegaze, grunge, and punk influences, creating heavier, more cathartic music in an attempt to bridge their artistic persona with their real-life identity. Ćmiel graduated from Central Saint Martins in London with a degree in Fine Arts in 2020.
