William "Bill" Fay is an English singer, pianist and songwriter born 1943 in London. Fay's first two albums Bill Fay and Time of the Last Persecution, released 1970 and 1971 on the Deram label, have been recognised as Baroque Pop/Contemporary Folk classics. Fay was dropped by the label but his work enjoyed a growing cult status in the 1990s, and began releasing new work in the 2000's. Fay's idiosyncratic sound has been compared to slightly off-key mix of Bob Dylan, David Blue, Nick Drake and Leonard Cohen. His new album Countless Branches came out in 2020. On describing his new found popularity, Fay commented: "Up until 1998, when some people reissued my albums, as far as I was concerned, I was gone, deleted. No one was listening. But then I got the shock that people remembered my music. I was doing some gardening, and listening to some of my songs on cassette, and a part of me thought they were quite good. I thought, Maybe somebody will hear them someday." Fay's songs have been covered by artists such as Wilco, The War on Drugs, Marc Almond, Current 93 and Okkervil River. To-date, Fay has released seven albums, standouts include the first two, as mentioned, plus Tomorrow, Tomorrow and Tomorrow (2005) by the Bill Fay Group, Life is People (2012) and Countless Branches (2020).
