Dando Shaft | Artist
Dando Shaft was an English progressive folk and folk jazz band formed 1968 in Coventry UK by Kevin Dempsey (guitar, vocal), Dave Cooper (guitar, vocal), Martin Jenkins (multi-instrumentalist), Roger Bullen (bass) and Ted Kay (percussion). After moving to London in 1970, the band added singer Polly Bolton, who had previously worked with June Tabor. The band's style was based on traditional themes of English and Irish folklore, similar to contemporaries such as Pentangle, however they incorporated progressive elements such as exotic tempos and a psychedelic sound reminiscent of Scottish contemporaries The Incredible String Band. Dando Shaft is today recognised as one of the major influences on the progressive stream of the 1960s folk revival. Their first two studio albums An Evening With Dando Shaft and Dando Shaft, are regarded as their best works. Other outstanding albums include Lantaloon and the 1990 compilation Reaping The Harvest.
