Antônio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim aka Tom Jobim was a Brazilian composer, pianist, guitarist, songwriter, arranger, and singer born 1927 in Rio de Janeiro. Considered one of the great exponents of Brazilian music, Jobim internationalized bossa nova and, with the help of important American artists, merged it with jazz in the 1960s to create a new sound, with popular success. As a result, he is sometimes known as the "father of bossa nova". Among his many works, Jobim composed the song "The Girl From Ipanema", which first appeared on the 1965 album Getz/Gilberto, and has become one of the most recorded songs of all time. As a young man of limited means, Jobim earned his living by playing in nightclubs and bars and later as an arranger for a recording label before starting to achieve success as a composer. Jobim became prominent in Brazil when he teamed up with poet and diplomat Vinicus de Maraes to write the music for the play Orfeu de Conceição in 1956. In 1958 the Brazilian singer and guitarist João Gilberto recorded his first album with two of Jobim's most famous songs, "Desafinado" and "Chega de Saudade". This album launched the Bossa Nova movement in Brazil. The sophisticated harmonies of his songs caught the attention of jazz musicians in the United States, principally after his first performance at Carnegie Hall in 1962. A key event in making Jobim's music known in the English-speaking world was his collaboration with the American jazz saxophonist Stan Getz, Jothe Brazilian singer João Gilberto and Astrud Gilberto, which resulted in Getz/Gilberto (1963) and Getz/Gilberto Vol.2 (1964). The release of Getz/Gilberto created a bossa nova craze in the United States and subsequently internationally. The album also won the 1965 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, and the Awards for best Best Jazz Instrumental and Best Engineered Album. "The Girl from Ipanema" won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year. Up until his death in 1994, Jobim released over 30 studio albums, including collaborations with Sergio Mendes, Frank Sinatra, Elis Regina, Edu Lobo and Gal Costa. Standout albums include Black Orpheus (1959), The Composer of Desafinado, Plays (1963), Wave (1967), Francis Albert Sinatra & Antônio Carlos Jobim (1967), Stone Flower (1970), Matita Perê (1973), Elis & Tom (1974) and Inédito (1995). Daniel Jobim, Antonio Carlos' grandson, performed "The Girl from Ipanema" during the opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
