The Beastie Boys were an American hip hop group formed 1981 in New York City by Michael "Mike D" Diamond, Adam "MCA" Yauch and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz. Mike D and MCA were previously in hardcore punk band "The Young Aborigines" but recruited Ad-Rock and changed their style to hip hop. They toured with Madonna in 1985 and released their debut album Licensed to Ill the following year. The group mixed elements of punk, funk, rap, rock and jazz in their music and were characterised as alternative hip hop. They were one of the top selling and longest lived hip hop acts of their time. Their first four albums: Licensed to Ill, Paul's Boutique, Check Your Head and Ill Communication, are excellent, as is their 1998 release Hello Nasty.
