Between the Buried and Me, often abbreviated as BTBAM, is an American progressive metal band formed 2000 in Raleigh, North Carolina, by Tommy Giles Rogers Jr. (lead vocals, keyboards), Paul Waggoner (lead guitar, backing vocals), Nick Fletcher (guitar), Jason King (bass) and Will Goodyear (drums). Dustie Waring (guitar), Dan Briggs (bass, keyboards), and Blake Richardson (drums) would later replace Fletcher, King and Goodyear, and remain in the present day lineup. The core band members came together after the demise of metalcore bands From Here On and Prayer for Cleansing. BTBAM's musical style has been described as a blend of progressive metal, technical death metal, and metalcore. Their sound incorporates thick guitar riffs and death metal growls interwoven with prog rock influenced keyboards. The band acknowledges a diverse range of influences including Sepultura, Metallica, Pantera, King Crimson, Soundgarden, Faith no More, Pink Floyd and Smashing Pumpkins. To date they have released 11 studio albums and three superb live albums. Standouts include Colors (2007), The Great Misdirect (2009), The Parallax II: Future Sequence (2012), Colors II (2021), and the live album Colors_Live (2008). Critics have praised Between the Buried and Me for their ability to infuse metalcore with more complex, artistic, conceptual, and emotive soundscapes, making the band important in the development of modern progressive music. The band's name "Between the Buried and Me" comes from the lyrics of the Counting Crows song "Ghost Train".
