Burzum was a Norwegian music project founded 1991 in Bergen, Norway, by Varg Vikernes. Although Burzum never played live performances, it became a part of the early Norwegian black metal scene and is considered one of the most influential acts in the history of black metal. Vikernes, aka Count Count Grishnackh, was previously in the bands Kalashnikov and Old Funeral before forming Burzum, which is a word meaning "darkness" from the fictional Black Speech language created by J.R.R. Tolkien. From 1994 to 2009, Vikernes was jailed for the murder of Mayhem guitarist Øystein Aarseth and the arson of three churches. His music has moved from guitar based doom metal towards a more ambient synth based sound. Stand-out albums include Burzum, Hvis lyset tar oss, Filosofem, Det som engang var and Fallen.
